This study was conducted to select the optimal competition index for the investigation of competition status among individual trees in young stand of Korean white Pine. For this, seven competition index models and eight searching methods of competitor trees were first used to estimate competition status of individual trees in study site. Then, 56 competition indices were compared to select the best competition index by the correlation analysis with periodic annual increments of diameter, basal area and volume. Based on the correlation analysis, the competition indices of ME-H3 and H-H2 were equally better than others in their performances.
Considering the efficiency and reliability of the selected competition indices, however, it was concluded that the H-H2 is better than ME-H3 in young even-aged stands. The reason is that the searching method of competitor trees of H3 has some limitations, such as the change of competitors by the range of pHning and difficulties of additional measurement in young even-aged stands. It is also recommended that the competition index selected in this study might be applied to growth prediction models as independent variables to improve the prediction ability of the growth models.
Key words: young stand, distance-dependent competition index, searching methods of competitor trees, correlation analysis, periodic annual increments
