Western white pine(Pinus monticola Dougl.) seedlings grown for two growing seasons and stored for different time periods in cold storage at Lewiston and Moscow nurseries were compared for infectability when inoculated with basidispores of Cronartium ribicola. The relationship between needle's stomatal characteristics and nursery environment and infectability of Pinus monticola was evaluated. Seedlings raised at the two nurseries came from the Moscow White Pine Seed Orchard seed, and they were genetically the same and raised at each nursery environment before they were artificially inoculated. Infection efficiency(infections per unit area of stomata) was 70 times greater on the Lewiston nursery seedlings that have been stored longer time in cold environment than the Mloscow nursery seedlings. Statistically significant differences were found in stomatal rows, stomata per row, stomata per needle, and stomatal  density(P<0.01). The Lewiston Nursery seedlings had smaller number of stomata and lower stomatal density, but the infection efficiency was high. The high infection level on the Lewiston nursery seedlings more likely reflects the prolonged period of cold storage, and they were physiologically immature when they were inoculated. So, it appears that resistance mechanisms may net be fully developed. Therefore, this suggests that expression of genes related to rust resistance in western white pine can potentially be manipulated by regulation of phenology. If such genes can he selectively activated, several new molecular tools might be employed to enhance our understanding of environmental regulation of genes for blister rust resistance.
Key words: Pinus monticola, Cronatium ribicola, infectability, basidiospores, resistance mechanism
