The information of natural process in forest development is important for ecological forest management and conservation of biodiversity. This study was carried out to understand forest stand dynamics such as structure and productivity change of Pinus parviflora forest in Ullengdo Island where we established a permanent plot in 1995. Forest stand characteristics were investigated in 1995 and 2003. The number of stems larger than 2 cm in DBH was 5,180 per ha in 1995 and 4,780 in 2003, respectively. Basal area was increased from 60.17 §³/ha to 69.87 §³/ha, and annual biomass increment was 6.89 ton/ha. The annual number of recruited stems was 52.5 per ha with the rate of recruitment of 1.14% in a year and the mortality was 102.5 stems/ha/year with the mortality rate of 2.13% in a year. Major cause of tree mortality was the suppression by canopy trees, and the mortality rate of individuals smaller than 10 cm in DBH was reached more than 95%. About 78.1% of the dead stems were standing death type. It was considered that the stand was in stem exclusion stage and still growing. And it was predicted that the Pinus parviflora forest would be replaced by Tsuga sieboldii forest if vast disturbance would not happen. It is needed that the researches on the characteristics of regeneration and long-term monitoring of the stand should be carried out for the conservation of the P. parviflora forest .
Key words: stand dynamics, long-term ecological research, mortality, biomass
