                                                               May, 2007

  From the Chairman

  Dear Friends and Colleagues:

Let me take this opportunity to say hello to my friends and colleagues all the world over. I am Prof. Yi, Jae-Seon, College of Forest and Environmental Sciences, Kangwon National University, who took office as Chairman of "the Society for Korean White Pine (SKOWP)" that was started in February, 2005.

As widely known, Korean white pine is a tree species found at high altitudes that are distributed in a wide area covering Korea, North-East China and the woodlands in Russia adjoining those Korean and Chinese regions. They are also found in isolated mountainous regions in Japan. Studies on this species are mostly conducted in Korea, China and Russia.

A typical tree species going well with the emotions of the residents of the areas where they are found, Korean white pine features its nuts (called 'pine nut') that are rich in protein and fatty acids, thus endearing itself as a fancy food for so long.  Its timber that gives off a particular aroma has widely been used as a timber for furniture. The timber of this white pine that has grown in the wild woodlands which features a high level of hardness and reddish tints is called "Hongsong" or  red pine in China, and known as "Joshenmatz" in Japan. It is our understanding that those scholars residing in the area where they are found have the first responsibility to take up the study of it on their hands, as is the case with other disciplines. It is an excellent  botanical species that is worth an international research with the participation of researchers from the regions to which this white pine is native.

Many knowledgeable persons share the same thought that this white pine could be the right kind of tree for the reforestation in North Korea, where much of the woodlands has been ruined. The advantage the tree enjoys of harvesting both nuts and timber makes it fully qualified as a source of a short- and long-term incomes from the forest, while at the same time it is best suited to the climatic condition in North Korea, which promises to thrive there.

To this end, the Society is planning to publish collections of papers on this white pine in English on a biennial basis with the participation of the membership and other contributors. I expect the Society to make meaningful contributions to the international forest community by providing an international forum where the results of studies along with related technology are shared and exchanged.

To materialize the foregoing programs, we have opened a web site where information could be exchanged and shared by all interested in this discipline, thus providing a concourse where information on ongoing study programs and forestry businesses as well as the results of existing studies could be shared and exchanged.

Our sincere thanks go to Hongchun-gun Office, Kangwon-do, and Institute of Forest Science, Kangwon National University for their cooperation that has made it possible to launch this program. I will do all I can to help the Society continue to remain active and contribute to the advancement of new science and technology. I call upon you all to join us in this march toward a new mile stone in this attractive discipline in the days to come.

Sincerely,

Jae-Seon Yi, Ph.D.
